A History of Family Ownership…

Year after year, generation after generation, Wheeler Hardware Company remains dedicated to flexible, customized service!

Mellette Wheeler founded Wheeler Hardware Company in 1945 in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. After World War II, Mellette and his son Willard saw the future in commercial construction and remodeling, and by 1952 they had set a course for Wheeler Hardware to become the dedicated commercial hardware distributor and hollow metal fabricator the company is today.

Mellette retired in 1962 while Willard continued to grow the company. Willard watched the company grow from five employees to more that thirty-five, including the 1972 Shoreview, Minnesota expansion into metal door fabrication under the management of the firm’s partner Jim McCulloch. Shortly thereafter Jim’s son Paul and Willard’s son Kirk joined the business and together they carried on their joint family traditions of growth and flexibility – the hallmark of Wheeler Hardware.

In 1992, the family tradition continued as Paul and Kirk welcomed Paul’s son Craig McCulloch to the business.

In 2001 the company acquired Stan’s Door Service, Inc., a full-service company with over thirty-five years’ experience in maintaining, repairing and installing automatic door systems.  That same year, the Door and Frame Shop and the Hardware Sales Division merged and moved into the company’s new location in Roseville, MN; making Wheeler Hardware Company an efficient competitor equipped for the 21st Century.

After Kirk Wheeler lost his courageous battle with cancer in December of 2003, Paul McCulloch purchased the remaining shares of Wheeler Hardware Company from the Wheeler family. In 2005, Craig McCulloch began taking on ownership of the business and together, they continued to advance and specialize in the industry, while doubling the company in size.

After remodeling and expanding their building in 2016, Wheeler Hardware was ready for more growth with new offices, a bigger warehouse and more production power than ever before.  This led to the acquisition of one of their competitors, Straughan Hardware in July 2018.  Wheeler Hardware welcomed the new staff joining the team, bringing decades of experience with them.
